Abuse and Neglect in Peel

Here are some quick facts about child poverty, abuse and neglect in Peel Region.
- 1 in 6 children live in poverty. That’s over 71,000 children, an increase of 51% between 1997 and 2005
- Nearly 50% of single mothers are unable to afford housing
Between April 2010 and March 2011:
- Peel Children’s Aid responded to 11,264 calls about children’s safety and well-being from families, teachers, doctors and concerned citizens. Of these, 6,619 resulted in investigations of suspected child abuse and neglect.
- Peel Children’s Aid served 8,366 families.
- Supportive, loving adoptive families cared for 45 children from Peel.
- Peel Children's Aid provided caring and stable homes for children in need with 96 kinship families and 130 foster families.
- Peel Children's Aid had more than 500 volunteers who gave more than 34,000 hours of support and drove 1,074,867 km in Peel.
- Peel Children’s Aid has a diverse staff of 444 full and part-time child protection workers, child and youth workers and staff serving the diverse community of Peel.
